Standard in Europe, many Amazon FBA moves, and tight fits.

  • Euro pallets almost always beat US pallets by 10–15% because of the narrower width (two fit side-by-side more cleanly).
  • Double stacking works well for boxed food or uniform cartons, but rarely for chemical drums or automotive components that cannot support top weight.
  • Reefer containers lose a bit to insulation: 20ft reefer ~8–10, 40ft reefer ~20–24.

What Actually Limits How Many You Can Load

Floor space is only part of the story. These factors cut the count more often than people expect.

Pallet orientation

Rotate pallets (long side vs short side facing door) to squeeze extra. For US 48×40, "thin" orientation (40" toward walls) sometimes adds one pallet.

Weight distribution

20ft maxes around 28 t, 40ft around 30 t. Heavy energy equipment or chemical totes force single layer even when height allows double. Always place heaviest pallets on the bottom and center weight over bogie positions to avoid road fines.

Stacking safety

Bottom pallets must hold the top without crushing. We test compression for food cartons but limit chemical IBCs to single layer. Leave 50–150 mm clearance at walls, ceiling (ISTA recommends 150 mm top gap), and doors for forklift access and bracing.

Industry-specific constraints

Follow this sequence every time:

  • Measure actual pallet + cargo height (including overhang).
  • Calculate total weight including pallets (~20 kg each wooden).
  • Test orientations mathematically or with loading software.
  • Load heavy first, light on top; alternate directions for stability (interleaved pattern).
  • Use airbags, straps, and bars to fill gaps and prevent shift.
  • Document with photos and a loading plan for destination.

Pinwheel or mixed patterns can add 1–3 pallets in borderline cases. For Euro-heavy shipments to Europe, switch to Pallet Wide if available-it often pays for itself.
